Who we are:

In September 2010 the Northallerton Branch of the WEA (Workers Education Association) engaged the services of Community Archaeologist Kevin Cale to run a ten week course on discovering the landscape heritage of the Kirby Wiske and Breckenbrough area.

The course began on Monday 27th September 2010 and over the next few weeks its members will be introduced to the wide variety sources that can be consulted to provide an historical and archaeological background to this area. To compliment this a visit is being arranged to undertake a tour of the local archives at North Yorkshire County Council Records Office. In addtion to gathering documentary evidence field visits will be undertaken throughout the term in order to familiarise the team with this landscape and instruct in the team in ways of reading the heritage in the landscape.

Getting involved:

Anyone wishing to get involved please contact Kevin Cale or alternatively come along on a Monday evening to St. Jame's Church, Ainderby Road, Northallerton at 19:00.

Why use a wiki?

Wikidot provides a communiuty based research project with an ideal platform for sharing and gathering resources between its members and with the wider world. The Great Ayton Community Archaeology Project, inspired by one of its members Mike Newton, was the first heritage group in the north of England to explore the wiki's potential. Since this site was created in October 2008 it has become a repositary for an ever increasing volume of historic material that is being freely shared across the world.
